Starting from an analysis of a particular text, a suicide letter, this paper takes on the problem of aspectuality as it is conceived in semiotics, or rather, as a general dimension of discourse and not only as a characteristic circumscribed to the verbal sintagm. But it is by means of the contributions of linguistics that semiotics is able to elaborate it’s own reflections and associate aspectuality with modality. Finally, this article leads to the proposal that both dimensions are sustained by a passional and ethic background which are the result of the same metalinguistic process where they create a complex relationship.
