The Semiotic Dilemmas of Enunciation in ChatGPT

Abstract

In this work, we intend to explore the type of ChatGPT enunciation, and some semiotic dilemmas associated with it. We carry out this inquiry using theoretical constructs that allow us to analyze this developing phenomenon. We conclude that, although it is possible to speak of enunciation in these cases, it must be clearly distinguished from human enunciation, qualifying it as “machinic”. This designation highlights the multiple differences in terms of production of meaning, ideological position, role of the user/recipient, semiotic effects of interaction, among other aspects. This issue has not been systematically addressed so far, given its novelty and permanent updating. For this reason, we consider it necessary to build flexible theoretical frameworks that promote diverse analyses on the status and concrete effects of incorporating these language models into our existence.
